Iron-Clad Leadership

By Beverly Floyd

The wise proverb, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man (or woman) sharpens another,” is useful in helping leaders determine the caliber of people with whom they should surround themselves.

Iron in the human body is essential to transporting oxygen to your blood, as well as feeding the neurotransmitters to your brain. Iron deficiencies can bring forth Anemia, whose symptoms can come on so slowly that you may feel no sudden physical change. However, over time the absence of iron can starve your body of the oxygen it needs to survive, resulting in physical and mental exhaustion.

Surely, you see the correlation:

Absence of iron-clad leadership in your organization will eventually drain you, both physically and mentally.

IRON SHARPENS IRON

In material form, iron is a solid substance. The proverb teaches us to hone our skills and sharpen our abilities with others who are also solid. This is where the challenge begins . . .

How do you recognize iron-clad leaders with solid credentials?

SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND

The good news is that iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. That means there’s a whole lot of it around. Seek and you shall find: Take an inventory of the people in your organization; are they iron-clad or iron-deficient?

Assess the leadership potential of those around you.
